“Where has she gone this time?!”

Groans of frustration echoed loudly through the plum tree forest. Scuffled footsteps followed soon after as disciples and Elders ran in scattered paths across the Sect grounds. Anxiety heightens amongst the juniors. Exasperation swells from the seniors and Elders. As the skies darkened and the sun slowly laid down to rest below the horizons, all those who remained on site at the Plum Blossom Sect begrudgingly accepted that their Sect Leader had run away once again.

Cherri was only a Sect Leader by name through her clan’s lineage. Those within the Plum Blossom Sect long enough knew that it was the senior disciples and Elders who maintained order within the ground’s walls. Despite the disciples’ best efforts, the crafty fox would always find a way to escape her containment in search of anything more fun than her obligations.Named after the abundant flora sprouting along the mountain side, the Plum Blossom Sect is one of the many martial arts organizations hidden deep within 崑崙山 (Kūnlún Mountain) and home to the celestial Red Fox Clan. Back when the realm was overflowing with spiritual energy, the hushed lullabies of rustling leaves would fill the mountain side. Thin, outstretched arms of each tree would gently wave their delicate petals to the Queen Mother of the West upon every softly whispered breeze. The celestial foxes of Plum Blossom Sect took pride in their care of the trees and even more pride in their devotion to protect all residents in neighboring villages. The local natives experienced centuries of peace from the Sect’s devotion. It truly was a heavenly paradise for all.Attracted by the grand tales of legendary heroes and epics of exciting missions, countless adventurers and cultivators went on expeditions in search of the renowned Sect. Many who lived in the mortal realm roamed aimlessly and hopelessly around the mountain’s base, wishing to find the entrance into the fabled land. All who ventured knew the journey would be perilous. Protected by guardians and prowling dangerous beasts, only the worthy and the strong were able to ascend. The decline in Kunlun was negligible initially. From the Ruoshui River all the way across to Yanhuo Mountain, residents seldomly ran into lost, bewildered mortals. Ascensions of new immortals became a rare occurrence. With no new neighbors or visitors, the buzz of once lively villages gradually grew colder and colder. The heavy weight of silence felt especially unsettling at night in the forest when the only sounds that echoed around were one’s own footsteps and heartbeat.Mythical beasts and celestial beings grew weaker as faith and belief fell to the wayside. Kunlun’s spiritual energy waned as people stopped believing. The mortal realm moved on, focused on the advancement of technology and science. Logic triumphing over wonders and legends. The era of myths, folklore, and gods were coming to an end. While immortals commonly visited the mortal realm in the past, most were unwilling to give up their life of opulence in Kunlun to reside in human communities. As human advancements started to outpace the developments within the spirit realm, the once coveted immortal life seemed primitive in comparison. Those remaining on Kunlun Mountains no longer saw their homes as paradise. Less and less returned to the spirit realm after their descension. The Red Fox Clan was not impervious to the decline. Aside from those who decided to assimilate in the mortal realm by choice, celestial foxes diminished the greatest from demons and humans who hunted, captured, and slain them as a sport. Their coveted red pelts and tails stolen away to use in talismans and spells. With the dwindling number of clan members and disciples, the future of the Plum Blossom Sect was bleak.Cherri’s birth was auspicious – for the Clan, the Sect, and all of Kunlun Mountain. In a weakening realm where births amongst spiritual beings decreased with each passing year, Cherri was a beacon of hope to those who remained. The Clan was overjoyed, no longer overcome with worry about the lack of heir and successor. The young princess, though surrounded by love, would have a childhood wrought with endless training. The Elders wasted no time and rushed to sharpen the kit’s martial arts aptitude as soon as she learned to walk, desperate to pass on their knowledge to the new generation. Even Cherri’s dreams offered no solace as innumerable fighting stances and formations plagued her slumbering mind. While Cherri remained diligent in her studies, her curiosity often whisked her away to explore nearby forests and villages. The first time it happened, the Sect was in an uproar. All Elders scoured the grounds in search of her. Tensions soared as they feared the worst in losing their sole heir. Only for everyone to find themselves staring dumbfoundedly at the young princess, slumbering under the shade of the plum trees mere feet away from the Sect with a book splayed across her in a carefree manner. Her free-spirited nature only swelled with age. The searches were easier when she was a kit as she couldn’t stray far from the Sect. However, much to the Clan’s dismay, the distance traveled grew larger as the princess grew older and stronger. Efforts to restrain the fox were futile. There was nothing Cherri was more dedicated to than mischievously learning every pathway and method to sneak out from under the Elders’ watchful gaze.Despite the numerous fetch and chase missions of the young princess, the Sect appointed Cherri as its Leader mere days after she gained her third tail. Her wanderlust often wrought headaches with the Elders, but they hoped that the heir's succession would keep her contained within the Sect walls. A desperate act based on the assumption that her new title would instill a greater sense of responsibility towards her disicples. The Elders, unfortunately, were very wrong. There was little that could keep Cherri away from the allure of sweet delicacies and promises of fun.Cherri, now under the guise of missions for the Sect, freely wanders the world in all the realms as the Plum Blossom’s Sect Leader. At least, until her disciples find her once more to ferry her back home...

Tl;dr – Cherri is an irresponsible Sect Leader and often runs away to the mortal realm to play games, eat tasty food, and explore the wonders of the world.
